Expert advice, safety at the heart of every installation
Having spent 14 years as a firefighter, I saw first-hand the damage that chimney fires can cause. That experience has stayed with me and is why I place such importance on installing stoves correctly, using a HETAS Registered Installer, and making sure customers understand how to safely use and maintain their stove and chimney.
Richard Randall
Installations are carried out by Richard Randall Woodburners Limited, a HETAS Registered Installer, in accordance with the relevant Building Regulations, manufacturer’s instructions and safety requirements.
Every job is carried out by our own installer, not a subcontractor, and finishes with the HETAS certificate of compliance your insurer and building control will ask for if you ever sell the property.
Installation materials and installation services are supplied under a separate contract with Richard Randall Woodburners Limited to any order you place for your stove or hearth.
How it works
Six steps from enquiry to first fire
No pressure and no guesswork. We’ll assess what your property needs, help you choose the right stove and hearth, and make sure you know the costs and timescales before any work begins.
01
Enquiry
Call or email us to organise your free home survey. We’ll have an initial chat about what you’re looking for and let you know how we can help.
02
Free home survey
We visit your property to measure the opening and check the chimney. We’ll also discuss stove sizing and flue options, and identify any hearth requirements or building work that may be needed. Following the survey, you’ll receive a written quotation detailing the recommended works and costs.
03
Select & order your stove
Once we know what will work safely and efficiently in your home, you can choose your stove. We’ll help you compare suitable models and order the one that’s right for your room, style and budget.
04
Choose your hearth
If a new hearth is needed, we’ll help you find the right fit for your space, whether that’s a bespoke stone hearth templated and prepared by our stonemason, a bespoke concrete hearth finished with tiles of your choice, or an off-the-shelf option for a simpler, faster solution.
05
Installation
Installation typically takes one to five days, depending on the amount of building work involved. This may include preparing or altering the fireplace, fitting the hearth, installing the flue or liner, and fitting and testing your new stove. We’ll confirm your installation dates once the quotation is agreed.
06
Certificate & aftercare
Once everything is fitted and tested, we complete the relevant HETAS certification and notification, and talk you through how to safely use and look after your new stove.
What’s involved
What a stove installation involves
Every property is different, so we assess your fireplace, hearth, chimney or flue and the proposed stove before confirming what your installation needs.

Fireplace & hearth
Your fireplace may need adapting to give the stove the clearance it needs to circulate air safely. This can mean exposing and cleaning up existing brickwork, replastering, or fitting a lintel or fire surround. Hearths range from flagstone or ceramic tile through to a bespoke natural stone slab in granite, limestone or slate.

Chimney & flue
A flue liner stops gases escaping through ageing brickwork and gives the optimum flue diameter for your stove. A cowl keeps out debris and birds. Where there is no existing chimney, an insulated twin wall flue system provides an alternative. Depending on the height and access to your chimney stack, scaffolding is occasionally needed. We will tell you at survey if this applies to your property.

Stove installation
Your stove is connected to the flue liner and register plate with a proper seal to stop flue gases escaping. On completion we supply your HETAS certification, confirming the work has been carried out by an approved installer, which you will need if you ever sell the property.

Staying compliant
Three rules every stove owner should know
Straightforward guidance from HETAS on staying compliant and avoiding fines once your stove is in.
Use a registered installer
A poorly installed stove is a safety risk and can affect your home insurance. HETAS recommends using a registered installer for installation, servicing and sweeping alike, which is exactly how we work.
Know your smoke control area
Many built-up areas fall within a Smoke Control Area, which sets rules on what you can burn and which appliances are allowed. If yours does, you will need a DEFRA exempt stove and suitable fuel, we will confirm this at survey.
Burn the right fuel
UK suppliers are legally required to sell ready-to-burn wood and smokeless fuel. Burning anything else, including wet wood, produces excess smoke and can damage your stove and flue. Look for the Ready to Burn mark whenever you buy fuel.

After your installation
Certification, and looking after your stove
Where your installation needs it, we notify HETAS electronically once the work is complete, and your certificate of compliance arrives by post direct from HETAS. HETAS also recommends regular appliance checks and professional flue sweeping as part of safe ongoing use.
If you have any concerns about your installation, please get in touch using the details on our Contact page and we will arrange to look into it.
