Choosing a stove

Choosing the right stove for your home

Choosing the right stove isn’t just about finding a design you love. It also needs to suit your room, your property, and your chimney or flue, and the way you intend to use it. We offer personal advice to help you choose the right stove for your home, taking into consideration:

  • Room size and ceiling height
  • Age and construction of the property
  • Heat output required
  • Existing chimney or flue arrangements
  • Style and design
  • Colour and finish
  • Budget
  • Local requirements, including Smoke Control Areas

What size stove do I need?

A bigger stove isn’t necessarily better. We help work out an appropriate kW output for your room, taking into account its dimensions, ceiling height and the age and construction of your property. This helps us recommend a selection of suitable stoves rather than choosing purely on appearance or maximum heat output.

Working out the size yourself

Measure your room’s length, width and height in metres and multiply them together to find the total volume in cubic metres. Divide that figure by:

  • 14, for a room with standard insulation
  • 10, for an older or draughty room
  • 24, for a modern, well insulated new build

The final figure is your required output in kW.

Smoke control

Smoke Control Areas

If your property is within a Smoke Control Area, additional rules apply to what you can burn. We’ll check this for your property and, where it applies, advise you on choosing a suitable DEFRA-exempt appliance and using the correct fuel when recommending a stove for your home.

Hearths & finishing touches

The hearth can make a big difference to the finished appearance of your stove installation. It also needs to meet minimum size and construction requirements to comply with Building Regulations.

We can supply a range of hearth options, or, if you’re looking for something more individual, we work with a local stonemason who can template, supply and install a bespoke hearth made specifically for your fireplace. Depending on the look you’d like to achieve, materials can include granite, slate or Portland stone. We can also source off-the-shelf granite, slate and glass hearths in a variety of shapes and sizes.

A tiled hearth is another option. We can discuss creating a raised concrete base as part of the installation, which can then be finished with a tile of your choice.

We’ll help you choose a hearth that complements both your stove and your room, while making sure it meets the requirements of the installation.
